Who the project was for:
Recreated in collaboration with Robert Bird Group and Christie Civil – the Menangle Pedestrian Bridge is located about 250 meters south of Menangle Station, providing pedestrian access to Mirvac’s residential development, The Village.
Grating FRP Australia was contracted to supply a lightweight, durable, and visually refined alternative to traditional concrete decking for a pedestrian bridge in Menangle, NSW. The goal was to meet long-term safety and performance requirements while reducing project cost and time-to-completion.
Project Purpose:
To deliver a high-performing pedestrian access bridge with a safe, slip-resistant surface and attractive appearance, without the weight, cost, and delay associated with concrete construction. The project was aimed at fast-tracking usability while maintaining aesthetic and structural integrity.
Project Challenges
Budget:
- Budget-sensitive solution required: The client sought a cost-efficient alternative to a fully concrete-formed bridge.
2. Installation:
- Installation complexity: The bridge needed to be installed quickly with minimal equipment and labour.
3. Design:
- Aesthetic expectations: As a public pedestrian bridge, visual appeal was a priority alongside durability.

Solutions:
Material:
- Custom 30mm micromesh FRP grating: Provided a visually appealing and structurally effective surface over galvanised steel support frames.
Cost:
- Reduced cost of construction: FRP’s light weight reduced transport, labour, and machinery needs, lowering overall project costs.
Install:
Simplified installation: Panels were manufactured to fit and allowed rapid on-site placement without the need for concrete pouring or heavy lifting.

Project Outcome:
The Menangle Pedestrian Bridge installation was completed efficiently and within budget, delivering an immediate improvement in pedestrian access and safety. The use of FRP micromesh panels helped Christie Civil meet aesthetic and performance expectations while saving on labour and material handling. The result was a reliable and low-maintenance structure with enhanced public usability.
Why FRP Was Chosen
Fibre Reinforced Plastic provided the perfect combination of durability, visual appeal, and reduced construction complexity. Its non-slip properties and fast installation make it a standout material for pedestrian bridges where timing, safety, and presentation are all critical.
Aesthetic:
- Non-slip surface with modern appearance: The micromesh FRP surface provided safety and aesthetics in one product.
Timely:
- Rapid installation timeframe: The system was installed and ready for use in days, not weeks, accelerating the project timeline.
Installation:
No heavy lifting required: All installation was carried out without the use of cranes or large equipment, improving workplace safety and efficiency.
